June 2027 Umrah: early-season dates, extreme heat and what to expect

A fresh start after Hajj

June is when Umrah normally comes back to life. Once Hajj is over in mid-May, the Holy Cities begin welcoming Umrah pilgrims again, and the first full month of the new season has a special atmosphere: Makkah emptying of Hajj crowds, the new Hijri year 1449 beginning, and pilgrims arriving with the eagerness of people who have waited through the spring closure.

For working adults, June has another attraction: it sits between the bank holidays and the school summer, so annual leave is often easier to book than in July or August, and package prices are back at our standard starting level.

There is one important caveat. At the time of writing, the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah has not announced the 1449 season calendar. Everything on this page assumes the season reopens on a similar timetable to last year, and we will update it, and contact anyone who has registered, the moment official dates are published.

What we know about the 1449 season so far

Item Status
Hajj 1448 (Arafah to Tashreeq) Expected 15–19 May 2027
Last year’s opening Visas from 31 May 2026 (14 Dhul Hijjah), Makkah entry from 1 June 2026
1449 opening, if the same pattern holds Around 20 May 2027 (projection only)
Official 1449 calendar Not yet announced

In plain terms: Umrah is expected to reopen after Hajj, typically around late May or June, and June departures are therefore very likely but not yet guaranteed. When you book a June trip with us, we confirm everything in writing once the Ministry publishes its dates.

Coping with the hottest month in Makkah

There is no getting around it: June is hot. On the 1991–2020 averages it is the hottest month of the year in Makkah by daytime high, and Madinah is just as fierce.

Day (average high) Night (average low)
Makkah in June 43.9°C 29.3°C
Madinah in June 43.0°C 29.0°C

Nights that stay close to 30°C mean there is little relief even after dark. Pilgrims who manage well in June tend to follow the same rules:

  • Perform tawaf and sa’i between late night and Fajr, when the mataf is at its coolest, and rest indoors through the afternoon.
  • Drink Zamzam little and often rather than in large amounts at once, and add oral rehydration salts if you are sweating heavily.
  • Use an umbrella or parasol in the courtyards and wear light-coloured, loose clothing outside ihram.
  • Carry spare sandals or socks: the marble outside the shaded areas can be very hot underfoot at midday.
  • Know the signs of heat exhaustion (dizziness, headache, nausea) and get into the shade and air-conditioning at once if they appear.

School holidays in June: a Scottish advantage

The UK school calendar shapes June more than people expect. The English May half-term (31 May to 4 June 2027 for Birmingham schools) overlaps the very start of the month, which could give families a short early-season window if the new calendar allows it. After that, English schools are in term until 22 July.

Scotland breaks up much earlier. Glasgow schools are expected to close on Friday 25 June 2027 and Edinburgh’s term ends on Tuesday 29 June, so families from Glasgow and Edinburgh can travel at the end of June at standard June prices, several weeks before English summer departures push prices up. Scottish airports have no direct flights to Jeddah, so these trips include one connection: Istanbul from Edinburgh, or Dubai with Emirates from Glasgow.

June prices and hotel choice

June packages start from £625 per person for 3★, £725 for 4★ and £895 for 5★, all on a four-sharing basis and including return flights, the Umrah visa, hotels and transfers. Prices are confirmed at booking, and you can choose 7, 10, 12 or 14 nights.

In this heat, the distance from your hotel door to the Haram is the single biggest factor in how you feel at the end of each day.

  • Closest: the 5-star packages use Pullman ZamZam Makkah, about 100 m away, or Swissôtel Makkah at 210 m, both inside the Abraj Al Bait complex. In Madinah, Anwar Al Madinah Mövenpick is just 50 m from Masjid an-Nabawi.
  • Close: our 4-star packages use Elaf Kinda (160–280 m) or the Sheraton Makkah Jabal Al Kaaba, about 200 m away with a pedestrian bridge, plus Dallah Taibah (160–200 m) in Madinah.
  • Budget: the 3-star packages use Emaar Andalusia (700–800 m) or Al Kiswah Towers (900 m to 1.4 km). Those walks are tough at 44°C, so we suggest them mainly for younger, fit pilgrims who will travel at night.

Because 4★ starts only £100 more than 3★ in June, it is the tier we recommend for most families and anyone over sixty.

Shaping your day around the sun

In June your routine in the Holy Cities is turned almost upside down. The pilgrims who get the most from an early-summer Umrah treat the hours between Isha and the late morning as their “day”, and the hours from midday to Asr as the time to sleep. A typical day in Makkah might look something like this:

  1. After Isha: a light meal, then tawaf and sa’i once the marble has cooled; this is when most people perform their Umrah itself.
  2. Before Fajr: tahajjud in the Haram, then Fajr in congregation, followed by Qur’an recitation while it is still bearable outside.
  3. Early morning: ziyarat outings, if planned, should leave straight after breakfast. A drive to Jabal al-Nour or to Arafat and Mina is far easier at 8am than at noon.
  4. Midday to Asr: pray Dhuhr in the nearest air-conditioned area, then rest at the hotel.
  5. Late afternoon: return for Asr and stay through Maghrib, when the evening breeze, such as it is, begins.

Madinah follows the same pattern. Plan the visit to Masjid Quba, the mosque of the two qiblas and Mount Uhud for the first hours of daylight, and save Jannat al-Baqi, right beside Masjid an-Nabawi, for after Fajr. Because each person can book the Rawdah through Nusuk only once in 365 days, choose a slot that does not leave you queuing in the sun.

Children and older relatives need extra care. Build in more rest than you think necessary, keep a cool bag of water and snacks in the room, and do not be afraid to pray in the hotel on the hottest afternoons if someone is struggling.

Flights for the new season

Saudia’s non-stop flights from Heathrow and Manchester carry our 4★ and 5★ packages from those airports; everything else flies Turkish Airlines via Istanbul, apart from Glasgow’s Emirates connection through Dubai. Midlands pilgrims should note that Saudia’s Birmingham–Jeddah route is suspended, with 1 April 2027 given as the earliest possible restart. Whether it is flying again by June is not yet known, so for now our Birmingham packages continue to route through Istanbul.

Whichever way you fly, remember that Jeddah is inside the miqat. If you would rather not wear ihram on a long hot journey, ask about starting in Madinah: you would then enter ihram at Dhul-Hulayfah on the way to Makkah. With no direct UK–Madinah flights, this means a connection.

Booking a June trip before the dates are official

Many pilgrims prefer to secure flights and hotels early, especially Scottish families aiming for the last week of June. Payments are explained in our booking policy. Our flight-inclusive packages are ATOL protected (ATOL No. 11203), so a booking with an ATOL Certificate is financially protected if the company holding the licence fails.

As always, look at the UK government’s Saudi Arabia travel advice before booking and before departure, since your insurance terms may depend on it.

Not keen on the heat? March is the last cooler option before the closure. For the main family holiday, compare July and our summer Umrah packages; for the closure itself, see May.

Questions

June Umrah FAQs

Can I do Umrah in June 2027?

Very likely, but it depends on the 1449 Umrah season calendar, which has not yet been announced. Last year the season reopened right after Hajj, on 31 May 2026 for visas. If the same pattern holds, June 2027 will be the first full month of the new season. We confirm dates as soon as the Ministry announces them.

How hot is Makkah in June?

June is the hottest month in Makkah by daytime temperature, averaging a high of about 43.9°C and a low of around 29.3°C. Madinah averages roughly 43°C by day and 29°C at night. Most pilgrims perform their Umrah between late night and Fajr and stay indoors during the afternoon.

How much is Umrah in June 2027?

June 2027 packages start from £625 per person for 3★, £725 for 4★ and £895 for 5★, based on four sharing. Each includes return flights, the Umrah visa, hotels and transfers, and is confirmed at booking. Prices are lower than in July and August because English schools are still in term.

When do Scottish schools break up for summer 2027?

Glasgow schools are expected to close on Friday 25 June 2027, and Edinburgh's term ends on Tuesday 29 June 2027. That gives Scottish families the chance to travel at the end of June, before English schools break up on 22 July and summer demand rises.

Is June a good time for a first Umrah?

It can be, if you handle heat well and choose a hotel close to the Haram. The Haram is often calmer in the weeks after Hajj than during the school summer holidays. Elderly pilgrims or anyone with health conditions may prefer the cooler months from November to March instead.

What should I wear for Umrah in summer heat?

Outside ihram, wear loose, light-coloured cotton or linen, a hat or umbrella for shade, and comfortable sandals. Women often choose a lightweight, breathable abaya. Men's ihram is two unstitched white sheets. Bring spare socks for hot marble and oral rehydration salts in case of heavy sweating.
