Choosing your departure city and airport for Umrah

Start from the airport that suits you

Where you fly from affects more than the drive to check-in. It decides whether you can fly non-stop, how long the journey takes, and how easily elderly relatives or young children will cope on travel day. We run Umrah packages from 13 UK cities, each linked to one of five airports: London Heathrow, Manchester, Birmingham, Edinburgh and Glasgow.

Only two UK airports currently have non-stop flights to Jeddah, both operated by Saudia: Heathrow, at about six hours to six and a quarter, and Manchester, at about six hours twenty to six forty. There are no direct flights from the UK to Madinah.

Non-stop or one stop?

Non-stop with Saudia

Our 4-star and 5-star packages from Heathrow and Manchester use Saudia’s non-stop service. It is the simplest option for families, older travellers and anyone who wants to board in ihram and arrive without a connection. Manchester’s schedule increases to 10 flights a week from 1 November 2026.

One stop via Istanbul

All 3-star packages outside Glasgow, and every package from Birmingham, Leicester, Nottingham and Edinburgh, connect with Turkish Airlines in Istanbul. Glasgow is the exception: packages from there fly Emirates, changing in Dubai. The Istanbul to Jeddah leg is about four hours, and the total journey is usually nine to twelve hours depending on the connection. It keeps prices lower and means you can fly from your nearest airport.

Notes by region

North West and Yorkshire

Manchester is the natural hub for Greater Manchester, Lancashire and Yorkshire. Leeds Bradford airport is closer to many West Yorkshire homes, but we have found no Gulf or Istanbul hub-carrier service there, so most pilgrims make the drive to Manchester for the non-stop option. Saudia departs from Manchester’s Terminal 2.

The Midlands

Saudia’s non-stop Birmingham–Jeddah route is suspended, with 1 April 2027 the earliest it could resume. Our Birmingham, Leicester and Nottingham packages therefore fly from Birmingham via Istanbul. East Midlands Airport currently has no Gulf or Istanbul hub service. If a non-stop flight matters to you, Heathrow or Manchester can be quoted instead.

London and the South

Heathrow is the only London airport with non-stop flights to Jeddah. British Airways has permanently suspended the route, and Gatwick currently has no direct flights. Luton travellers join our Heathrow packages.

Scotland

Edinburgh and Glasgow pilgrims fly from their own airports with one connection, avoiding a long trip south. Edinburgh packages change in Istanbul with Turkish Airlines, and Glasgow packages change in Dubai with Emirates; Qatar Airways via Doha can be quoted on request.

Travel day tips, whichever airport you use

  • Ihram: if Makkah is your first stop, you must be in ihram before the aircraft crosses the miqat, as Jeddah lies inside it. Many pilgrims change at the UK airport before security, then make their intention when the crew announce the miqat.
  • Zamzam on the way home: each pilgrim can usually bring one factory-sealed 5-litre bottle, bought at the official counter in Jeddah or Madinah airport. It travels in the hold as a separate item; Saudia carries it as a free extra piece.
  • Allow extra time: if you are driving an hour or more to Manchester or Heathrow, build in a buffer for traffic, especially at the start of school holidays.

Choosing for your family

  • Young children or elderly parents: a non-stop flight from Heathrow or Manchester, paired with a 4-star or 5-star hotel, usually makes travel day easiest.
  • Budget first: fly from your nearest airport via Istanbul on a 3-star package.
  • School holidays: check timings on our month-by-month guide, since airports and flights fill up quickly in peak weeks.

Whichever airport you choose, read the FCDO page for Saudi Arabia before booking: it currently advises against all but essential travel, and travel insurance may depend on it.

Common questions

Which UK airports have direct flights to Jeddah?

Currently only London Heathrow and Manchester, both with Saudia. Gatwick has no direct flights, British Airways has permanently suspended its Heathrow route, and Saudia’s Birmingham service is suspended until at least April 2027. There are no direct flights from any UK airport to Madinah.

Can I fly direct to Madinah from the UK?

Not at the moment. There are no current non-stop flights between the UK and Madinah. You can fly to Jeddah and transfer to Madinah, or connect through a hub such as Istanbul or Doha. Our packages include transfers between the cities either way.

Which airport should I use from Leeds or Bradford?

Most pilgrims from Leeds and Bradford fly from Manchester, about an hour and a quarter by road. Leeds Bradford Airport is closer, but it does not currently offer the hub connections used for Umrah. Manchester also has Saudia’s non-stop flights to Jeddah.

Do Birmingham Umrah packages fly direct?

No. Saudia’s Birmingham to Jeddah route is suspended, with 1 April 2027 the earliest possible restart. Our Birmingham, Leicester and Nottingham packages fly from Birmingham with Turkish Airlines via Istanbul. If you would prefer a non-stop flight, we can quote from Heathrow or Manchester.

How long is the flight from the UK to Jeddah?

Non-stop, around six hours to six and a quarter from Heathrow and six hours twenty to six forty from Manchester. With a connection in Istanbul, total travel time is usually nine to twelve hours depending on the layover. Allow time on arrival for the transfer to your hotel.

Is the price different depending on my departure city?

Our starting prices of £625 at 3-star, £725 at 4-star and £895 at 5-star apply on every city page. Your final price depends on flight availability on your dates, so it can vary slightly between airports and is confirmed when you book.
