September 2027 Umrah: post-summer value with summer heat
Summer prices end, summer heat does not
September is the month when the economics of Umrah change. English schools are back by the start of the month (Birmingham’s summer holiday ends on 1 September 2027) and Scottish pupils returned in mid-August, so the family rush is over and our package prices drop back to their base level. For pilgrims who are not tied to the school calendar, this is the best-value month of the new season so far.
The weather has not caught up with the calendar, though. In Britain September feels like autumn; in Makkah and Madinah it is still high summer, with average highs above 42°C in both cities. Anyone planning a September trip should prepare exactly as they would for July or August.
How much you save compared with August
| Hotel standard | August from | September from | Saving per person |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3★ | £715 | £625 | £90 |
| 4★ | £825 | £725 | £100 |
| 5★ | £1,025 | £895 | £130 |
Prices are per person, based on four sharing, and include return flights, the Umrah visa, hotels and transfers. They are confirmed at the time of booking. For two couples sharing a 5★ quad room, the September saving over August comes to £520 between them. Packages run for 7, 10, 12 or 14 nights.
September weather in the Holy Cities
| September average | Makkah | Madinah |
|---|---|---|
| High | 42.9°C | 42.3°C |
| Low | 29.2°C | 28.6°C |
These figures are almost identical to August’s, with only a slight easing at night. In practical terms, September asks the same of you as any summer month: perform your Umrah in the late evening or before Fajr, avoid walking in the open between late morning and Asr, and drink far more water than you think you need.
Real relief arrives later in the autumn. October brings Makkah’s average high down to around 40°C, and November to the mid-thirties, so heat-sensitive pilgrims may prefer to wait a month or two. Those who go now are rewarded with lower prices and more room to breathe in the Haram, which for many is a fair trade for a few extra degrees.
Packing for September
- Loose, pale cotton or linen clothing; leave the British autumn jacket at home, apart from one thin layer for the aircraft.
- A compact umbrella or parasol for shade, which most scholars permit for men in ihram.
- Electrolyte sachets and a refillable water bottle; Zamzam coolers are found throughout both mosques.
- Soft, well-worn footwear and plasters for blisters, as sweat and heat make feet more prone to rubbing.
- Passports with at least six months’ validity from your arrival date, and your meningitis ACWY certificate.
Who September suits
With schools back in session, the British pilgrims you meet in September are typically:
- Couples and retired parents who stayed home during the expensive holiday weeks.
- Families with pre-school children, who can take advantage of the lower prices before their little ones start school.
- Workers who could not get summer leave because colleagues with children had priority.
- Pilgrims combining Umrah with ziyarat who want more time in Madinah without peak-season crowds.
If you are travelling with very young children, remember that everyone aged one and over needs the meningitis ACWY vaccine at least 10 days before arrival, and that the heat is still extreme. For older pilgrims or anyone with a medical condition, a conversation with your GP before booking is sensible.
Using the calmer weeks well
With fewer British families in the Haram, September is a good time to add depth to your trip rather than just completing the rites. Some pilgrims perform an additional Umrah on behalf of a deceased parent, entering ihram again at Masjid Aisha in Tan’eem, the nearest point outside the Haram boundary. Others spend extra time at the graves in Jannat al-Mu’alla in Makkah, where Khadijah (RA) is buried, and Jannat al-Baqi beside Masjid an-Nabawi.
In Madinah, a Rawdah visit booked through the Nusuk app is a highlight for many. The permit can be used once every 365 days, so if you visited during an earlier trip within the last year you may need to wait. Morning ziyarat to Masjid Quba and the Seven Mosques at the site of the Battle of the Trench round off the stay.
Season status for September 2027
September should fall comfortably within the 1449 Umrah season, but its dates have not been announced yet. The 1448 season opened immediately after Hajj, on 31 May 2026, and the 1449 season is expected to follow a similar pattern after Hajj in May 2027. Until the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah confirms its calendar, we treat September departures as expected rather than guaranteed, and we will be in touch once official dates are out.
It is also worth knowing which visa you will travel on. Packages are issued with an Umrah visa arranged through the licensed Nusuk system, and the one-year multiple-entry Umrah visa introduced in July 2026 allows repeat trips within 365 days, provided each trip has its own approved package and Nusuk permit. If you are already thinking about a winter or Ramadan return, mention it when you book and we will explain the options.
Choosing your hotels
Because September is still hot, we suggest weighing distance before price. Lower September rates make it a sensible month to step up a hotel tier, since the upgrade costs less than in the summer holidays.
3★ from £625
In Makkah, Emaar Andalusia is 700–800 m from Masjid al-Haram and Al Kiswah Towers 900 m to 1.4 km. In Madinah, Zowar Alalami at 300–350 m is a good walk in the cool of the night, and Al Aqeeq Al Rawda by Sedra is about 650 m away. Ideal for fit, budget-conscious pilgrims who keep to night-time worship; see our 3-star Umrah packages.
4★ from £725
Elaf Kinda (160–280 m) and Sheraton Makkah Jabal Al Kaaba (about 200 m, connected by a pedestrian bridge) in Makkah; Dallah Taibah (160–200 m) and Elaf Taiba (220–500 m) in Madinah. Our 4-star packages are the sweet spot for most September travellers.
5★ from £895
Swissôtel Makkah (210 m) and Pullman ZamZam Makkah (100 m) in the Abraj Al Bait towers, with Anwar Al Madinah Mövenpick (50 m) or Pullman Zamzam Madinah (110 m). With September’s lower prices, the 5-star packages cost less than a 4★ trip at Christmas.
Flights and the journey
Saudia’s direct flights from Heathrow and Manchester are used for our 4★ and 5★ packages from those two airports, and seats are generally easier to find once the holiday peak has passed. Pilgrims from Leicester fly from Birmingham via Istanbul with Turkish Airlines, while those from Glasgow change planes in Dubai with Emirates, as there are no direct Scottish flights to Jeddah.
From Jeddah airport, transfers to Makkah take around 60–90 minutes by road. Remember that the miqat is crossed before landing, so you will need to be in ihram on the plane; changing at the UK airport saves a scramble in the aircraft toilets. If you prefer to fly into Madinah first, which avoids ihram on the flight, this involves a connecting route, as there are no direct UK–Madinah services.
Coming home, each pilgrim can check in one sealed 5-litre bottle of Zamzam bought at the airport’s official counter, carried as a separate piece rather than inside a suitcase.
Book a September Umrah
How payments work is explained in our booking policy. Flight-inclusive packages are ATOL protected (ATOL No. 11203). Make it a habit to check the FCDO’s Saudi Arabia travel advice page when you book and before departure; your insurer may rely on it when deciding what is covered.
Weighing up dates? August suits families tied to the holidays, while October and November bring cooler weather. Families might also consider our October half-term packages.

Questions
September Umrah FAQs
Is September a good time for Umrah?
September is one of the best-value months, because UK schools are back and package prices drop after the summer. The downside is the heat: Makkah still averages about 42.9°C by day. It suits couples, retired pilgrims and families with pre-school children who are comfortable performing their rites at night.
How much is Umrah in September 2027?
September 2027 packages start from £625 per person for 3★, £725 for 4★ and £895 for 5★, four sharing. That is £90 to £130 per person less than August. Prices include return flights, the Umrah visa, hotels and transfers, and are confirmed at booking.
Is it still hot in Makkah in September?
Yes. September averages are almost the same as August, with Makkah at around 42.9°C by day and 29.2°C at night, and Madinah at about 42.3°C and 28.6°C. Noticeable cooling starts in October and November, so heat-sensitive pilgrims may prefer to wait.
Is Makkah less crowded in September?
For UK pilgrims, September is usually quieter than July and August because schools have returned. You will still find the Haram busy at Friday prayers and in the evenings, but booking flights and hotels close to the mosque tends to be easier than during the summer holidays.
Will the Umrah season be open in September 2027?
It is expected to be. The 1449 season calendar has not yet been announced, but by precedent Umrah reopens straight after Hajj, which in 2027 is expected in mid-May. September would then be well within the season. We confirm dates as soon as the Ministry publishes them.
Do I need ihram on the plane to Jeddah?
Yes, if you are going straight to Makkah. Jeddah lies inside the miqat boundary, so you must be in ihram before the aircraft crosses the miqat line, usually announced by crew around half an hour before. Many pilgrims change at the UK airport and make their intention on board.
