Manchester Airport on Oldham’s doorstep

Few towns in the North West are as well placed for Umrah as Oldham. Manchester Airport is roughly 27 km away, typically about 30 minutes by road, and it is one of just two UK airports offering a non-stop flight to Jeddah.

That short hop changes the shape of the trip. You can leave home after a normal breakfast, avoid an overnight stay near the airport, and be back in your own front room within an hour or so of landing on the way home.

Oldham’s Muslim community has deep roots in the town, and plenty of local families have made the journey more than once. Whether this is your first Umrah or a return visit, the practical details below are written with Greater Manchester travellers in mind.

In Madinah, 3★ guests stay at Zowar Alalami (300–350 m from Masjid an-Nabawi) or Al Aqeeq Al Rawda by Sedra (about 650 m). The 4★ package uses Dallah Taibah (160–200 m) or Elaf Taiba (220–500 m), and the 5★ package uses Anwar Al Madinah Mövenpick (50 m) or Pullman Zamzam Madinah (110 m).

You can choose 7, 10, 12 or 14 nights. The 7-night package is four nights in Makkah and three in Madinah, while 10, 12 and 14 nights are split equally.

Getting to Terminal 2 from Oldham

By car or taxi

For most families a lift or a pre-booked taxi is the simplest choice, especially with suitcases and an ihram bag. The route generally uses the M60 ring road round the south of the city; allow extra time in the weekday rush hours.

By tram and train

Oldham is served by the Metrolink tram network, and the airport has its own tram and rail stations, so public transport is possible. The journey usually involves at least one change and takes noticeably longer than driving, so check the Transport for Greater Manchester journey planner for the current route before relying on it.

With heavy luggage and elderly relatives, public transport is better suited to the solo traveller or a couple packing light.

Afternoon departure or late-night flight?

Saudia’s daily SV124 leaves Manchester at 13:45 and reaches Jeddah at 23:05 local time. From 1 November 2026 an extra late flight, SV128, departs at 22:10 and lands at 07:50 the next morning, taking the route to 10 flights a week.

The afternoon flight suits families with young children who sleep better in a bed on arrival night. The overnight service appeals to people who prefer to arrive in daylight and head straight into their Umrah, although you lose a night’s sleep in the process.

Both take roughly 6h20 to 6h40 in the air. On our 3★ packages you fly Turkish Airlines from Manchester to Istanbul, where there are three or four departures a day, and then on to Jeddah, a leg of about four hours; the total journey is typically 9 to 12 hours including the connection.

Because Jeddah is inside the miqat, you need to be in ihram before the plane crosses the boundary. Crews usually give about 30 minutes’ warning. On a Turkish connection, many travellers change during the stop in Istanbul or on board the second flight; check with your scholar on the details.

Weather in Makkah and Madinah through the season

Coming from a damp Pennine winter, the warmth can be a shock. These are average daytime highs and night-time lows from long-term climate records.

Madinah can feel genuinely cool after dark in mid-winter, so pack a light jumper. For milder conditions look at December Umrah; for a slightly quieter spell before the season closes, March is worth considering, and November is a good early-season option.

School holidays for Greater Manchester families

Term dates in Oldham vary between schools and academy trusts, so confirm yours before you commit. In broad terms, the 2026–27 picture looks like this.

The Christmas break is the busiest family window. If you would rather welcome the new year in the Haram, our New Year Umrah packages sit across the turn of January.

February half-term, in mid-February 2027, is expected to fall early in Ramadan, since the month is due to begin around 8 February. Those hoping to be there for Laylat al-Qadr should look at our last ten nights packages, with the 21st night expected on the evening of 27 February 2027, all subject to moon sighting.

The Easter holidays are not an option in 2027 because the final entry date for Umrah pilgrims is 23 March. The next season is expected to reopen after Hajj, typically around late May or June, and we will confirm summer dates as soon as the Ministry announces them.

Money

The Saudi riyal is pegged to the US dollar at 3.75 riyals to the dollar, so prices in the holy cities are stable from week to week. Check the current pound exchange rate shortly before you go rather than relying on an old figure.

Your Umrah permit

Performing Umrah requires a Nusuk permit booked for a specific date and time slot. Build it around your arrival time in Makkah so you are not rushing straight from the airport, especially if you land on the late Saudia flight.

Ziyarat in Madinah

After Makkah, many Oldham families value quieter days in Madinah. Mount Uhud and the Martyrs’ cemetery, where Hamzah (RA) is buried, Masjid al-Qiblatayn, where the qibla changed, and Jannat al-Baqi next to the Prophet’s Mosque are all within easy reach of the hotels we use.

An additional Umrah

If time allows, you can travel to Masjid Aisha at Tan’eem, just outside the Haram boundary, to enter ihram again for an additional Umrah. Ask your scholar about the practice before you go.

Coming home

Zamzam is the gift most relatives in Oldham will ask for. One sealed 5-litre bottle per pilgrim can be bought at the official counter in Jeddah or Madinah airport, and Saudia normally carries it free as an extra piece; it must be checked in separately, never packed inside a case.

Protection, deposits and travel advice

Our flight-inclusive packages are ATOL protected (ATOL No. 11203), so a booking with an ATOL Certificate is financially covered if the travel company fails. Remember that ATOL is not travel insurance; you still need your own policy.

Before booking, and again shortly before departure, look at what the Foreign Office says about Saudi Arabia; it currently advises against all but essential travel, and insurers may base their cover on that advice.

Make sure passports have at least six months left from the date of arrival, and book the meningitis ACWY jab at least 10 days ahead.
