Umrah month by month: weather, crowds, prices and season dates

How the Umrah year works

Umrah can be performed at any time of the Islamic year, but travelling on an Umrah package follows the Saudi season calendar. The current 1448 season opened on 31 May 2026. Its last date for issuing Umrah visas is 9 March 2027, the last entry into the Kingdom is 23 March 2027 and the last departure is 7 April 2027. The season then pauses for Hajj, with the Day of Arafah expected around 15 May 2027.

The 1449 season has not been announced yet. Going by previous years, it should reopen once Hajj is over, typically around late May or June, and we will confirm the dates the moment the Ministry publishes them. That is why the table below marks summer and autumn 2027 as expected rather than confirmed.

Reading the calendar by season

Winter: November to January

The most comfortable stretch of the year, with Makkah’s average highs between about 31°C and 36°C and Madinah cooler still. Prices sit at our standard level, rising only for the Christmas and New Year holidays. Ideal for first-timers and older parents.

Ramadan: February into March

Ramadan 1448 is expected to start around 8 February 2027, with Eid al-Fitr around 9 March. Demand and prices are at their peak, especially in the last ten nights. February half-term, 15–19 February, falls inside the first half of the month. See our Ramadan Umrah packages for details.

The spring closure: April and May

No Umrah packages run while the Kingdom prepares for and hosts Hajj. This rules out the 2027 Easter holidays, which begin after the 23 March last-entry date; our Easter Umrah page explains the alternatives. If you are flexible, aim for early March or June instead.

Summer: June to September

The hottest months, with average highs above 42°C in both cities. Families still travel in the school holidays, timing walks for night and early morning. Everything here depends on the 1449 season announcement; read more on our summer Umrah page.

Autumn: October

Temperatures begin to fall, with October averaging about 40°C in Makkah. Half-term week is the busiest point of the month for UK pilgrims.

How far ahead to book

Lead times vary a great deal through the year, and leaving it late costs most in the busiest months.

  • Ramadan and the last ten nights: book several months ahead. Hotels nearest the mosques go first, and visas must be issued by 9 March 2027.
  • Christmas and New Year: ideally by early autumn.
  • Standard months: a few weeks can be enough, though earlier booking gives more choice of hotel.
  • Summer and October 2027: register interest now; we can only confirm once the 1449 calendar is published.

Whenever you travel, allow time for the meningitis ACWY vaccine, which must be given at least 10 days before arrival.

Which month suits you?

  • Lowest prices and mild weather: November, January or early December.
  • Greatest spiritual reward: Ramadan, in February and early March 2027.
  • Children off school: Christmas, February half-term, summer and October half-term.
  • Older parents: the cooler months from November to February, ideally away from peak weeks.

Whatever month you pick, check the FCDO’s Saudi Arabia advice before booking and again before departure. It currently advises against all but essential travel, and your insurance may depend on it.

Common questions

What is the cheapest month for Umrah from the UK?

Our lowest starting prices, from £625 per person at 3-star, apply in November, December outside the holidays, January, March after Eid, June and September. Ramadan, school holidays, Christmas and New Year cost more. All prices include flights, visa, hotels and transfers and are confirmed at booking.

Which months can you not do Umrah?

Under the 1448 season calendar, the last entry for Umrah pilgrims is 23 March 2027 and the last departure 7 April 2027. Umrah packages then pause through April and May for Hajj. The 1449 season is expected to reopen after Hajj, around late May or June 2027.

What is the best month for Umrah weather?

December and January are the coolest, with Makkah averaging around 31–33°C by day and Madinah around 24–26°C. November and February are also comfortable. From June to September average highs exceed 42°C in both cities, so walks are best kept to night or early morning.

When is Ramadan 2027?

Ramadan 1448 is expected to begin on 8 February 2027, possibly 7 February, depending on the moon sighting. Eid al-Fitr is expected on 9 or 10 March 2027. The last date for Umrah visa issuance this season falls on 9 March 2027, so book Ramadan trips early.

Is it too hot for Umrah in summer?

It is very hot, with average highs around 43°C in Makkah in June and July, but many pilgrims manage well by performing Umrah at night and resting in the afternoon. Choosing a hotel close to the mosque makes a big difference. The cooler months suit older travellers better.

When will Umrah reopen after Hajj 2027?

The Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah has not announced the 1449 season yet. By precedent it reopens soon after Hajj; last season, visas and entry began on 31 May 2026. We will confirm 2027 dates and open bookings as soon as the official calendar is published.
