February half-term Umrah 2027: a family Ramadan in the holy cities

A half-term that lands in Ramadan

Because Ramadan moves about 11 days earlier each year, it overlaps February half-term for only a few years in each generation. In 2027, half-term week in England and Scotland runs from 15 to 19 February, while Ramadan 1448 is expected to begin on Monday 8 February. That places the holiday at roughly the 8th to 12th days of the blessed month.

For parents, that means a chance to take children to Makkah and Madinah during Ramadan without missing a single day of school. It is also, for the 2026–27 season, the last school holiday in which Umrah is possible: the Easter break begins after the Saudi last-entry date of 23 March 2027, as we explain on our Easter Umrah page.

Half-term and Ramadan dates side by side

Date School calendar Islamic calendar (expected)
Mon 8 Feb 2027 Term time 1 Ramadan (possibly 7 Feb)
Sat 13 – Sun 14 Feb Weekend before half-term About 6–7 Ramadan
Mon 15 – Fri 19 Feb Half-term in Birmingham (a guide for England) and Edinburgh About 8–12 Ramadan
Mon 15 – Wed 17 Feb Glasgow: two holiday days plus an in-service day (indicative) About 8–10 Ramadan
Sat 20 – Sun 21 Feb Weekend after half-term About 13–14 Ramadan
Evening of 27 Feb (approx.) Term time Last ten nights begin

Because the start of Ramadan depends on the moon, the Islamic dates could shift by a day. The school dates themselves can vary between councils and academies, so confirm with your child’s school before booking.

Fitting the trip into nine days

From the Saturday at the start of half-term to the Sunday at the end there are nine days, and our 7-night package fits inside with room either side. Seven nights means four in Makkah and three in Madinah.

Option A: Saturday 13 to Saturday 20 February

Fly out on the first Saturday, arrive in Makkah, perform your Umrah and spend the first half of the week at Masjid al-Haram. Transfer to Madinah midweek, pray Jumu’ah at Masjid an-Nabawi on 19 February and return on Saturday, leaving Sunday free to rest and get uniforms ready.

Option B: Sunday 14 to Sunday 21 February

Shifting everything by a day gives you the Saturday in Madinah as well. You return the evening before school, so this option is best for children who cope well with a quick turnaround.

Some parents add a Friday departure on 12 February, after the school day, to squeeze in more time. Saudia’s Manchester schedule includes a late-evening service that lands in Jeddah the next morning, though it does not operate every day; we will check the timetable for your date.

What Ramadan with children actually involves

Children are not obliged to fast before puberty, but many like to try a few fasts, and being in the Haram at iftar is something they rarely forget. A few things help a family Ramadan trip go well:

  • Shift the timetable. Taraweeh and the walk back can run late. Let children sleep in the afternoon so they are fresh for the evening.
  • Agree a meeting point. The mosques are very full after Maghrib. Pick a numbered gate and make sure every child knows it, along with your hotel’s name.
  • Know the permit rules. Children of any age may enter the Two Holy Mosques with family, but the minimum age for Umrah and Rawdah permits has been reported as five. A Rawdah visit is limited to once every 365 days per person.
  • Pace the Umrah. For young children, perform tawaf and sa’i at a quieter time, such as mid-morning while most people are resting.

Weather in February

Mid-February is one of the kindest times of year for a family pilgrimage. Makkah’s average high is about 32.6°C, with nights near 19.9°C, while Madinah averages around 27.0°C and drops to roughly 14.1°C after dark. Fasting in these temperatures is far easier than in summer heat, although the Madinah evenings call for a warm layer.

Preparing children before you fly

The families who get the most from a half-term Umrah usually start preparing a few weeks before departure. Nothing elaborate is needed, but a little groundwork turns an exhausting trip into a meaningful one.

  • Walk through the rites at home. Practise seven circuits around a table for tawaf and seven lengths of the hallway for sa’i, so the steps feel familiar.
  • Tell the stories behind the places. Children connect with Masjid Quba once they know it was the first mosque, and with Mount Uhud when they have heard about Hamzah (RA).
  • Learn a short du’a together. Choosing one supplication to make at the Kaaba gives each child something personal to do.
  • Pack for the timetable. A small bag with water, dates and a light jumper makes the long evening in the mosque far easier.

Older children who already fast at home may want to keep going during the trip. Talk it through in advance so expectations are clear, especially on the travel day.

February half-term prices

These packages are priced for the combination of Ramadan demand and school-holiday demand. Starting prices are per person when four share a room, which suits two parents with two children, and include return flights, Umrah visa, hotels and transfers. We confirm the exact price at booking.

Our suggestion for families

With small children in Ramadan, proximity matters. At 4-star you are roughly 160–280 metres from the Haram in Makkah, close enough to return to the room between Maghrib and Isha. The Sheraton’s pedestrian bridge keeps little ones away from traffic. If budget allows, the 5-star hotels shorten the walk further.

Flights and ihram for families

Our 4-star and 5-star packages from Heathrow and Manchester fly non-stop with Saudia, about six to six and a half hours to Jeddah. Every other departure, and every 3-star package, connects in Istanbul on Turkish Airlines; the one exception is Glasgow, served by Emirates through Dubai. Families in the East Midlands usually fly from Birmingham, which is about 45 to 50 minutes from Leicester; see our Leicester Umrah packages. In Lancashire, Manchester Airport is around 50 minutes from Blackburn, as covered on the Blackburn page.

If your first stop is Makkah, adults and older children performing Umrah must be in ihram before the plane crosses the miqat, since Jeddah is inside the boundary. Changing before boarding is far easier with children than trying to manage it in an aircraft toilet.

Checklist before February

  • Passports with at least six months’ validity from arrival, including children’s.
  • Meningitis ACWY for everyone aged one and over, at least 10 days before you land; for a 13 February arrival, aim to be vaccinated by the end of January.
  • Look at the current FCDO advice for Saudi Arabia, which at present advises against all but essential travel, and confirm your family travel insurance will still apply.

Questions

February Half-Term Umrah FAQs

When is February half-term 2027?

In Birmingham, a useful guide for England, and in Edinburgh, February half-term runs from Monday 15 to Friday 19 February 2027. Glasgow schools have 15 and 16 February off, plus an in-service day on 17 February. Academies and other councils may differ slightly, so check your school's dates.

Is February half-term 2027 during Ramadan?

Yes. Ramadan 1448 is expected to begin on 8 February 2027, so half-term week falls around the 8th to 12th days of the month. That makes it possible for children to experience Ramadan in Makkah and Madinah without taking any time out of school.

How much is a February half-term Umrah package?

February half-term packages start from £995 per person at 3-star, £1,195 at 4-star and £1,425 at 5-star, with four sharing a room. Flights, visa, hotels and transfers are included.

Can young children do Umrah in Ramadan?

Children of any age can enter the Two Holy Mosques with their family. The minimum age for Umrah and Rawdah permits has been reported as five. Young children cope best with a hotel close to the mosque, afternoon naps and Umrah performed at quieter times of day.

Do children have to fast during a Ramadan Umrah?

No. Fasting is not obligatory for children before puberty, and travellers may also postpone fasts. Many children enjoy trying a fast or two, and breaking it together at iftar in the Haram is often a highlight. Keep them well hydrated after Maghrib.

Is February half-term the last chance for a family Umrah this season?

For families tied to school dates, yes. The last entry date for Umrah pilgrims in the 1448 season is 23 March 2027, before the Easter holidays start. The next school-holiday opportunity depends on the 1449 season, expected to open after Hajj in 2027.
