The middle tier that most families choose

Ask pilgrims what they would change about their first Umrah and many will say the walk. A 4-star package answers that directly. Our Makkah hotels at this level are roughly 160 to 280 metres from Masjid al-Haram, which turns a quarter-hour trek into a stroll of a few minutes, while the price stays only modestly above our entry level.

The other big difference is the flight. From London Heathrow and Manchester, 4-star packages include Saudia’s non-stop service to Jeddah, so there is no change of plane in Istanbul. For a family with young children, that alone can make the decision.

The hotels we use at 4-star

The Sheraton and its pedestrian bridge

Sheraton Makkah Jabal Al Kaaba sits around 200 metres from the Haram and is linked towards the mosque by a pedestrian bridge. For parents with pushchairs or relatives who are unsteady on their feet, a route that keeps you away from road traffic is a real comfort, especially in the dark before Fajr.

Elaf Kinda

At 160 to 280 metres, Elaf Kinda is one of the closest hotels in our 4-star range. It suits pilgrims who want to return to their room between prayers, rest in the afternoon heat and still be back in the Haram well before the adhan.

Dallah Taibah and Elaf Taiba in Madinah

Dallah Taibah, 160 to 200 metres from Masjid an-Nabawi, is our first choice for families who want the shortest Madinah walk at this tier. Elaf Taiba covers a wider span of 220 to 500 metres; if you have a strong preference, tell us when you enquire.

Non-stop flights from Heathrow and Manchester

Saudia is currently the only airline flying non-stop between the UK and Jeddah, from both Heathrow and Manchester, and our 4-star packages from these two airports use it.

From Birmingham, Leicester, Nottingham and Edinburgh, 4-star packages connect through Istanbul, while Glasgow departures change in Dubai with Emirates. Saudia’s own Birmingham route is suspended, with April 2027 the earliest it could return. Flying direct also simplifies ihram. With no connection, many pilgrims change at Heathrow or Manchester, board in ihram, and make their intention when the crew announce the miqat, usually about 30 minutes before the aircraft crosses it.

4-star prices and package lengths

Our 4-star Umrah packages start from £725 per person, sharing a room for four. That covers return flights, the Umrah visa, hotels in Makkah and Madinah, and transfers between airport, hotels and cities. The final price is confirmed when you book.

• 7 nights: four in Makkah, three in Madinah

The starting price applies in our standard months, such as December outside the school holidays and January. The per-person figure assumes four in a room. Couples and smaller families who prefer a double or triple room pay a little more each, and we will show you both options side by side so you can decide whether the extra space is worth it. Who books 4-star, and why

Families with children

Being a few minutes from the mosque lets you go back for naps, meals and nappy changes without missing prayers. That flexibility makes the difference between a stressful trip and a happy one for many parents.

First-time pilgrims

The first Umrah can feel overwhelming. A short walk and a direct flight reduce the number of things that can go wrong, leaving more energy for worship.

Parents in their sixties and seventies

For older relatives who are mobile but tire easily, 4-star is often the right balance. If walking more than a couple of hundred metres is difficult, look at our 5-star packages, where Anwar Al Madinah Mövenpick is just 50 metres from Masjid an-Nabawi.

Groups travelling together

Four friends or two couples sharing a quad room can enjoy hotels close to the Haram at a manageable cost per person.

How 4-star holds up through the year

The value of a short walk changes with the season, so it is worth thinking about when you will travel as well as where you will stay.

Winter months

From November to January, Makkah’s average highs sit between roughly 31°C and 36°C. At this time of year a 4-star hotel gives you comfort rather than necessity; many pilgrims walk to every prayer and still have energy for ziyarat. If you are keeping costs tight in winter, 3-star is a fair alternative.

Ramadan

This is where 4-star earns its price. The mosques are at their fullest after Maghrib, and being two or three minutes away means you can break your fast, rest briefly and return for Taraweeh. Compare dates and prices on our Ramadan Umrah packages page.

Summer

With average highs above 43°C in Makkah in June and July, every metre outdoors counts. A 4-star hotel keeps your exposure to the midday sun to a minimum, which matters most for children and older relatives. Our summer Umrah page explains what we know about the 1449 season dates.

Across all of these periods, the gap between our two Madinah hotels is worth noting. Dallah Taibah’s 160 to 200 metres stays consistently short, whereas the far end of Elaf Taiba’s range, around 500 metres, feels longer in July than in January.

How 4-star compares

Walking times are approximate. At the starting prices, 4-star costs £100 more per person than 3-star and £170 less than 5-star.

Before you travel

• Passports must remain valid for six months from the day you arrive.
• Meningitis ACWY is mandatory for everyone aged one and over, given at least 10 days before arrival.
• Your Umrah requires a Nusuk permit with a set time slot; Rawdah visits are limited to once every 365 days.
• Please review the official FCDO advice on travel to Saudi Arabia when planning: it currently advises against all but essential travel, which some insurers treat as a condition of cover.
